He happened to be a guest, while I was a valet, but nevertheless he was super cool. Arnold Schwarzenegger had parked his Humvee in the center of the drive (causing some problems) so Tom encouraged us to throw snowballs at it, while shouting "Gas Guzzler!" Good times. Have you ever met someone who you know through media (of any kind), but they don't know you? It's kinda strange, and describes exactly how I felt meeting Yosemite for the first time. I was slightly intimidated, overwhelmed, and very impressed, but at the same time like "We're homies right? Oh… wait, we've never met! Can I park your car?" . As light slipped away, @elisaweiss and I took a few turns balancing (and bouncing) between two oceans of sea and sky. Rising wind brought a sinister edge to darkness. No time for star photos… We urgently pushed off for home, racing the light. Once settled by the hearth of a warm cabin fire, we shuddered at the thought of being out in the growing gale. The first night involved a comfortable sleep in my truck. The second involved a 60mph wind storm on an exposed ridge at 8,000 feet that busted my tent, and sent me down in the dark. On the way back, a bear and I met on the trail… another story. The funny thing is, this photo might be my favorite from the trip. All of 100 feet from the car. I wander and wonder, then work towards some compromise between what the camera and I separately see. . Drone photography offers a fascinating change of pace; previsualization is a little more challenging, you try to imagine locations from the air, you wander google earth, you check airspace restrictions, and you take a chance, you go for it. Levels of uncertainty and discovery are much higher. It’s definitely more exciting. . I’d seen salt flats from the air before, both from airplane windows and in the images of others, so I knew they would be fun, but nothing quite prepared me for the abstract compositional candy-land they provide once you’re hanging out up there. .
